The impact of stress on our health has received lots of attention lately, especially since the pandemic and in the current state of world affairs. Few discussions of cortisol, the stress hormone, reach the public in understandable terms.

As a former practitioner in health and wellness—and an avid martial artist and fitness enthusiast—I was delighted when my friend Dr. Mehmet Yildiz wrote a book that explains cortisol and its implications for our health — and clearly explains the science of stress.

Here is why I think you should read this book and why it could change how you view and treat your own stress.

Demystifying Cortisol in Understandable Terms

Dissuasions on cortisol usually involve complex terms with a focus on the hormone as the culprit to poor health. Yet, Dr Mehmet Yildiz’s Cortisol Clarity takes a practical, nuanced take on stress hormones.

Dr. Yildiz explains that while cortisol plays a crucial role in human physiology — it helps facilitate energy and balance our bodies — a more important aspect is how daily stress triggers myriad responses that affect cortisol.

Cortisol Clarity empowers readers to understand and manage stress more effectively. It’s also a wake-up call to how our environment affects our stress levels, and understanding this helps remove the stigma of biology or genetics as the controller of our lives.

The Anatomy of Chronic Stress

Dr. Yildiz makes a dramatic case for just how much everyday life — and prolonged stressors — affect our bodies in cognition, mood, and overall function.

To me, it is this aspect of the book that will resonate with so many, as so few medical professionals make this clear to their patients. Instead, doctors discuss hormones and treatments, leaving patients without an understanding of cortisol or stress's effects on their health.

Further into the book, Dr. Yildiz explores the connection between elevated cortisol levels and conditions like anxiety, depression, and burnout. His research shows that unresolved trauma, emotional conflicts, and habitual negative thinking contribute to a dysregulated stress response. Emotions are energy that act as stressors in our everyday life.

Too often, books on this subject lean heavily on either science or practicality — rarely both. Blending scientific research with real-world applications, Dr. Yildiz underscores the importance of self-awareness in stress management, making this book an invaluable resource for those seeking real, lasting change.

The Mind-Body Connection

From my own clinical practice, I realized that prolonged stress, not mere personality traits, caused insomnia, anxiety, and lack of motivation in many of my patients — all of whom were professional athletes.

Dr. Yildiz’s unique exploration of how trauma and emotional struggles influence cortisol levels is extraordinary. He explains why therapy, mindfulness, and self-awareness aren’t just abstract ideas but essential tools for long-term well-being.

Why You Should Read This Book

Perhaps Cortisol Clarity’s greatest strength is its ability to simplify complex medical and psychological concepts without oversimplifying or talking down to the reader. Dr. Yildiz writes with both expertise and approachability, making the book valuable for professionals and everyday readers alike.

While the book centers on cortisol and stress, its genuine message is much broader — it’s a guide to balance, awareness, and resilience. And that, in today’s mad-mad world, is more valuable than ever. You can learn more from the author’s introduction below.
